Why Does New Transformer Oil Also Need To Be Filtered?

Writer: Kaiqian Oil Purifier Release time:2025-11-03 16:39 Clicks:

During transformer installation, even when using brand-new transformer oil, filtration is essential. The core reason is that during production, storage, transportation, and filling, new oil may still become contaminated with impurities, moisture, gases, and other harmful substances. These contaminants severely compromise the oil's insulating properties and heat dissipation capabilities, ultimately damaging the transformer's safe and stable operation. The following details the specific hazards, sources of contamination, and the critical role of filtration:

Comparison of Transformer Oil Before and After Filtration

1. Potential Harmful Substances in New Transformer Oil and Their Hazards

The core functions of transformer oil are insulation (isolating the windings from the core and tank) and heat dissipation (dissipating heat generated by winding losses). Impurities, moisture, and gases can directly impair these two functions. The specific hazards are as follows:

SubstancesHazards
Solid impurities (such as metal debris, dust, fibers)1. Reduced insulation performance: Induces partial discharge, which can eventually break down the insulation layer.
2. Increased equipment wear: Causes mechanical wear and shortens component life.
Moisture1. Reduced dielectric strength: This can easily lead to insulation breakdown accidents.
2. Accelerated oil aging: Moisture reacts with oil additives to produce acidic substances, which corrode the transformer's internal metal components (such as the core and winding wires) and cause sludge to form, blocking heat dissipation channels.
3. Ice formation in low temperatures: If the transformer's operating environment is low, moisture will condense into ice particles, which will also damage the insulation.
Gas (such as air, nitrogen, methane, etc.)1. Reduced insulation performance: Air bubbles are easily broken down in an electric field, causing localized discharge.
2. Impacted heat dissipation efficiency: Air bubbles hinder convection heat dissipation through the oil, leading to localized overheating of the transformer.
3. Accelerated oil aging: Oxygen reacts with the oil, further degrading its quality.

2. Sources of Contamination in New Transformer Oil

Although new transformer oil meets standards (such as GB 2536 or IEC 60296), contamination inevitably occurs during subsequent processes. Specific sources include:

Production and Packaging Residues:

During refining and storage, trace metal particles (from equipment wear) or fibers (from filter cloths) may remain in the oil. The inner walls of packaging drums are not thoroughly cleaned, and dust may adhere.

Transportation and Storage Contamination:

If drums are damaged or poorly sealed during transport, air (containing moisture and dust) may ingress. And storage in humid environments, moisture can seep into the oil through gaps in the drum lid seal.

Contamination during filling operations:

If oil filling pipes and valves are not pre-cleaned and dried, residual dust and moisture inside can enter the transformer with the oil.

If the transformer tank is not thoroughly cleaned before installation (welding slag or rust), these contaminants can be washed into the oil during filling.

3. The Critical Role of Filtration

Kaiqian Vacuum Transformer Oil Purifiers apply physical filtration (removing impurities) and vacuum dehydration/degassing (removing moisture and gases) to ensure oil injected into transformers meets the standard.

Removing Solid Impurities: High-precision filter paper (typically ≤5μm) filters out metal debris, dust, fibers, and other contaminants from the oil, preventing partial discharge and component wear.

Deep dehydration and degassing: Utilizing the "heating-vacuum" system of vacuum oil purifiers reduces moisture content to ≤10 ppm (trace water) and gas content to ≤0.3%, restoring the oil's high insulation strength and heat dissipation efficiency.
